Along with the rest of the Diamond 12 series, it has been developed in collaboration with renowned loudspeaker designer, Karl-Heinz Fink, resulting in a speaker that benefits from extensive expertise. Wharfedale consistently pushes the boundaries of innovation to enhance audio immersion and enjoyment. Since 2001, Kevlar has been their material of choice when constructing Diamond series cones. Now, with the 12th iteration of the range, they've introduced a proprietary composite material called Klarity™. This new material comprises polypropylene, a substance with low distortion qualities, enhanced with mica to boost stiffness and minimise flexing. The outcome is captivating audio marked by meticulous precision, vibrancy, and a rapid response.
Bass/Mid Drivers
Extensive research has been conducted to ensure the highest fidelity from the mid/bass drivers in the Diamond 12 series. These speakers feature diaphragms powered by a meticulously engineered magnet system. This includes an aluminium compensation ring to significantly reduce distortion and intermodulation, traits which are common in less sophisticated motor systems. The voice coil, wrapped around a high-power epoxy/glass fibre bobbin, eliminates the addition of eddy currents and provides a power delivery superior to the typical aluminium bobbin used in similarly priced speakers.
Treble Unit and Crossover
The Diamond 12 series speakers achieve open and smooth high frequencies through the use of a 25mm dome constructed from woven polyester film, enhanced with a high-loss coating. This ensures wide dispersion and exceptional sound quality in various settings. The integration of an acoustic LKR 24dB topology in the crossover network, alongside air-core inductors, enables a flawless blend with the Klarity mid/bass drivers while eliminating distortion.
Cabinet Construction
The Diamond 12 speakers boast a cabinet design typically only found at a much higher price tag. Wharfedale acknowledges that inferior design can compromise performance, regardless of the quality of the drive system. While most others in the 12 series feature a rear-ported enclosure, the 12.C is closed-box, meaning it does not have a port. Through Intelligent Spot Bracing and careful material choices, Wharfedale significantly reduces cabinet resonance that leads to sound distortion. Attention has been paid to the characteristics of all materials used—even the glue—to ensure a natural, resonance-free listening experience.
