The Ortofon ST-70 is a moving coil (MC) signal transformer combining superior components with world-class engineering to deliver unparalleled sonic fidelity. Offering compatibility with most moving coil (MC) cartridges, the ST-70 features internal jumpers that automatically select between two gain/impedance options. Transformers are essential for the best MC cartridge performance due to their low output, requiring higher gain provided by step-up moving coil transformers or MC phono preamplifiers. Despite performing similar functions, these devices differ fundamentally in function and sonic character. Step-up moving coil transformers are often preferred for their low noise and distortion properties as well as their excellent sonic integrity, thanks to their completely passive operation.
