Using multiple plugs within your audio chain means separate earth/ground points. These multiple earth or ground points cause a ground loop problem. This creates an unwanted chain of noise, buzz and distortion. iFi’s iDefender+ provides the simple, effective solution you need.

When plugged into the source device’s USB socket, the iDefender+ detects whether there is a ground loop problem. It breaks the ground loop by intelligently disconnecting the computer’s earth and, as well as eradicating audible ground-loop hum, it lowers the system noise floor, improving resolution and dynamic contrast.

In addition, if an external power supply is plugged into the USB-C socket on its side, the iDefender+ will block power from the computer and instead feed any attached DACs that rely on USB power with clean power from the external supply. If a high-quality, low-noise power adaptor such as iFi’s iPower X is used, the performance of the USB DAC will be significantly improved.

Break the noisy USB power, but in the correct way

There are more than a few products that break the USB power connection, but more than not, they do very little because the noisy ground connection remains. For DACs that do not use USB power (except for handshake) the iDefender3.0 breaks the ground connection eliminating earth loops, while allowing normal handshake operation to continue.

It is now a hallmark of all the latest iFi signal and power products to be USB3.0 standard. First USB3.0 is backwards compatible with USB2.0. Second, in terms of the specifications, USB3.0 is superior to USB2.0 e.g. the wire gauge specification is more exhaustive and the connections are better.
