I\u2019ll admit, I have a small car, but the box had absolutely no chance of going in the boot, so I had to ask one of the lads with a bigger \u201cwhip\u201d to get them back to mine.<\/p>\n<p>That does set the tone quite nicely, though. The <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.av.com\/Speakers\/Monitor-Audio-Silver-100-8G-Standmount-Speakers-Pair-European-Walnut\/83RH\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Silver 100 8G speakers<\/a><\/strong> are not tiny lifestyle boxes you can quietly tuck away and forget about. They\u2019re substantial and confident. Front-on, I actually think they look great. The driver layout has a nice bit of theatre to it, especially with the large bass driver and tweeter guard. From the side, they are more \u201clarge wooden rectangle\u201d, but we\u2019ll get into that.<\/p>\n<p>For the review, I tested them with my Naim Atom and AudioQuest Type 4 speaker cable, then compared them against my usual Focal Aria floorstanders. I&#8217;ve never had Monitor Audio in my setup, so I come with an unbiased perspective; my thoughts are based on the actual speaker, not an affinity to the brand.<\/p>\n<p>This is where hi-fi gets interesting. The Silver 100 8G feels like Monitor Audio knowing its audience and leaning into it properly. The sound is clean, detailed, bright, revealing, and very much part of that Silver series identity. It might not be for everyone, but then what is? It\u2019s detailed, lively, and seriously impressive when it comes to stereo spread and midrange clarity, but it does need the right system and room to sound its best.<\/p>\n<p>Personally, I tend to prefer something a little warmer and fuller. But that doesn\u2019t take away from what the Silver 100 8G does well. Not unreasonably heavy, not impossible to move, just awkward in that way large speakers are when they\u2019re wrapped in protective material, and you\u2019re trying to lift them out without putting a finger through something important.<\/p>\n<p>The packaging is properly substantial, with all the foam and padding you\u2019d expect at this size and price. Getting them out was slightly less elegant. I ended up gripping the corners through the wrapping to get enough purchase, which worked, but didn\u2019t feel like my finest moment.<\/p>\n<p>In hindsight, I probably should have opened the box, turned it upside down, and lifted the packaging away like someone who had done this before, and not been so stubborn.<\/p>\n<p>Once out, they made more sense. Front-on, they look great. The big driver gives them presence, the tweeter guard adds interest, and the whole thing has that clean Monitor Audio confidence to it.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h4><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Build_and_design_quality\"><\/span>Build and design quality<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4>\n<p>Build-wise, the Silver 100 8G feels reassuringly solid. It\u2019s a big cabinet, and it has the sort of weight and finish you\u2019d expect from a speaker at this level. The edges are nicely rounded too, so even though the speaker itself is quite boxy, it doesn\u2019t feel harsh or unfinished.<\/p>\n<p>Front-on, I think they look great. The driver layout has a nice bit of drama to it, with the large 8-inch bass driver doing a lot of the visual heavy lifting. The tweeter guard and surrounding baffle detail also make the speaker look more interesting than just \u201cbig wooden box with circles in it\u201d, which is always appreciated.<\/p>\n<p>Side-on, I\u2019m less excited. In the walnut finish especially, there is a bit of big brown rectangle energy. It\u2019s not ugly, and the finish itself is nice, but some extra shaping or contouring would have helped break up the size a little.<\/p>\n<p>Setup is all pretty standard. You get separate HF and LF terminals with bridging plates if you\u2019re not bi-wiring or bi-amping. The plates themselves aren\u2019t the nicest things in the world, but they do the job. I did really like the little lipped banana plug covers, though. They come out easily without needing to attack them with a knife, which is a tiny quality-of-life thing, but a good one.<\/p>\n<p>The included port bungs are useful too, especially because these are large rear-ported speakers that some people will inevitably place closer to a wall.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h4><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Sound_quality\"><\/span>Sound quality<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-49369\" src=\"https:\/\/www.av.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/Monitor-Audio-Silver-100-8G-Speaker-in-walnut-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"Monitor Audio Silver 100 8G Speaker in walnut\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" \/>The Silver 100 8G sounds like a Monitor Audio speaker, and I don\u2019t mean that as a bad thing. There\u2019s a clear family sound here: bright, detailed, quite revealing, and more analytical than warm. If Bronze is the softer and easier-going end of the range, Silver feels harder-edged, cleaner, and a little cooler in character.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019ll be honest, that isn\u2019t always my personal preference. I tend to like a bit more warmth and body, so the Silver 100 8G wasn\u2019t always doing exactly what I naturally reach for. With older Van Halen records, that brighter top end came through quite clearly and didn\u2019t fully land for me.<\/p>\n<p>With darker electronic music like Lorn and Amelie Lens, they made much more sense. The extra clarity helped the textures open up without the sound becoming too thick.<\/p>\n<p>For a speaker with an 8-inch bass driver, I did expect a little more bass presence. It isn\u2019t weak, but it\u2019s more controlled and restrained than the cabinet size suggests. Where they really impressed me was imaging.<\/p>\n<p>Playing Battlefield 6 in stereo, the spread and placement were excellent, very wide-sounding, and with films, dialogue was genuinely clear. Annoyingly, maybe even clearer than my Focal Arias.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h4><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Compatibility\"><\/span>Compatibility<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4>\n<p>For testing, I ran the Silver 100 8G with my Naim Atom and AudioQuest Type 4 speaker cable, comparing them against my usual Focal Aria floorstanders. The Atom outputs 40W per channel into 8 ohms, so it\u2019s not a monster amp, but it\u2019s a capable all-in-one and usually has enough grip for sensible pairings.<\/p>\n<p>With the Silver 100 8G, I found myself turning the volume up to around 30-40 to get the kind of presence I\u2019m used to. Not a problem, but worth noting. These speakers do seem to enjoy a bit of power behind them<\/p>\n<p>That makes sense on paper. The Silver 100 8G has an 87 dB sensitivity, 8-ohm nominal impedance, and Monitor Audio recommends 50-200W into 8 ohms, so the Atom is just under that recommended range. It still worked, but I wouldn\u2019t say the speakers felt fully awake at very low volume.<\/p>\n<p>I also tried them with my dad\u2019s Cambridge Audio AXA35, which is rated at 35W per channel into 8 ohms. That pairing took me back to the more typical Monitor Audio brightness I remember from older ranges. Still detailed and clear, but a bit more forward than I\u2019d personally want for long sessions.<\/p>\n<p>So, compatibility-wise, I\u2019d pair these with an amp that has a bit of warmth, control, and decent power. They\u2019re not trying to be soft, warm, and cosy. They\u2019re much more about clarity, separation, and letting you hear what\u2019s going on.<\/p>\n<p>And they&#8217;re big. Not silly big, but big enough that you need to think about stands, space, and whether you actually want them visually dominating the room a bit.<\/p>\n<p>For films and games, I thought they made a lot of sense. Dialogue came through really clearly, and the stereo spread was genuinely impressive. For music, it depends more on what you like. Cleaner production, electronic music, and anything where detail matters works well with these speakers.<\/p>\n<p>Older, brighter recordings were less their thing, unless your hearing is a little lacking, as my dad thought Van Halen sounded great on these.<\/p>\n<p>So, are they for audio that needs good warmth and body? Probably not. Are they good speakers?
