Is it starting to look a bit grubby and dusty? Many people simply brush over their flat-panel TV screen with a detergent-free dry cloth and think that’s sufficient. But what about a deep clean? We’re talking about using a microfibre cloth and proper cleaning solutions to bring those vibrant colours back to your television.

Many of us lead such busy lifestyles that we tend to come home, flop onto the couch, switch on the TV, and relax with whatever program we fancy. It’s hard to find the time to give your television some TLC, especially when it can be a very delicate operation, but if we neglect it, grime and dust can accumulate. Over time, your TV can lose some of its colourful pop and zing.

The good news is that by following a few simple steps, you can maintain the quality of your picture and keep your television in good condition. So, with that in mind, here’s how to clean a TV screen.

[/et_pb_text][et_pb_text admin_label=” In a hurry?” _builder_version=”4.18.0″ _module_preset=”default” custom_padding=”20px||||false|false” hover_enabled=”0″ border_width_top=”2px” border_color_top=”gcid-45928375-1fd3-4d7e-b1f0-0adee316b54f” global_colors_info=”{%22gcid-45928375-1fd3-4d7e-b1f0-0adee316b54f%22:%91%22border_color_top%22%93}” sticky_enabled=”0″]

In a hurry?

Here’s the short version:

Power off and unplug the TV.

Have multiple microfibre cloths and a flat-panel TV cleaning solution on hand.

Wipe away any surface dust with one microfibre cloth until the screen is dust-free.

Dampen another microfibre cloth with your chosen TV cleaning solution, not the TV screen itself. Not cleaning your flat-screen TV regularly could shorten its lifespan, as these parts struggle to perform at optimal levels.

Additionally, there’s the cosmetic aspect and the vibrancy of the TV’s display, which you might not notice dulling gradually. There are dos and don’ts to keep in mind. The dos are plentiful, and as long as you prepare properly, the don’ts shouldn’t be a concern if you follow our guide thoroughly.

The first thing to do is make sure you have multiple microfibre cloths (we recommend our five-pack AVCOM Microfibre Cleaning Cloths). You’ll also need water (dampen the cloth and leave it to dry until it’s just slightly damp) or a special TV cleaning fluid specifically designed for TV screens. Additionally, have another microfibre cloth on hand for drying.

The don’ts are quite simple:

Never spray any liquid or cleaning products directly onto the TV screen

Don’t press on the TV screen

Never clean the screen with the TV switched on or plugged in

Now that we’ve covered the important safety precautions, switch the TV off and unplug it.

[/et_pb_text][et_pb_button url_new_window=”on” button_text=”SHOP AVCOM MICROFIBRE CLOTHS” button_alignment=”center” _builder_version=”4.18.0″ _module_preset=”default” custom_button=”on” button_text_size=”14px” button_text_color=”#FFFFFF” button_bg_color=”#0e95cf” button_border_width=”0px” button_border_color=”#0e95cf” button_font=”Arial|700|||||||” button_icon=”5||divi||400″ button_icon_color=”#FFFFFF” custom_padding=”10px|30px|10px|30px|false|false” hover_enabled=”0″ box_shadow_style=”preset6″ box_shadow_blur=”2px” global_colors_info=”{}” theme_builder_area=”post_content” button_url=”https://www.av.com/Accessories/AVCOM-Microfibre-Record-and-Turntable-Cleaning-Cloth-Pack-of-5/5T5D” sticky_enabled=”0″][/et_pb_button][et_pb_text admin_label=”Dry dust etc” _builder_version=”4.18.0″ _module_preset=”default” hover_enabled=”0″ global_colors_info=”{}” sticky_enabled=”0″]

Dry dust

As you would expect, this is the simplest part of cleaning the TV. Take the microfibre cloth and fold it until you have a small enough section of clean, flat cloth that fits into the palm of your hand.

With a light sweeping motion from the centre of the TV screen, lightly brush away any surface dust so the microfibre cloth collects it. Continue this until all loose dust is removed.

The key reason for dry dusting is to prevent dust from getting ingrained into the panel when we dampen the cloth. If dust becomes more ingrained with larger particle clumps, it can create more issues with heat, resulting in a moist, mucky, greasy residue that is even harder to clean.

Apply a cleaner

This is a very important step in cleaning your screen. Just as with the dry dust cleaning, fold the second microfibre cloth until you have a nice flat area. If you’re using water, wet the cloth ever-so-slightly, but then leave it until it is nearly dry.

If you’re using a specifically designed TV cleaning fluid, spray the microfibre cloth until it is moist, but not wet.

With your dampened microfibre cloth, start from the centre of the TV screen panel and clean outwards. This time, use a small circular motion, working towards the edge of the TV screen panel and concentrating on one-quarter of the panel at a time.

Rotate the microfibre cloth as needed. If you’re using a specifically designed TV cleaning fluid, you may need to reapply the spray to moisten the clean area of the microfibre cloth until the entire TV screen has been wiped.

Target stubborn spots

Sometimes, you’ll encounter a stubborn dirty grime spot that won’t come clean easily. The key here is not to press too hard on the panel, as this will only push the grime deeper into the screen, making it even harder to clean. Instead, moisten the cloth a bit more. Is it starting to look a bit grubby and dusty? Many people simply brush over their flat-panel TV screen with a detergent-free dry cloth and think that's sufficient. But what about a deep clean? We're talking about using a microfiber cloth and proper cleaning solutions to bring those vibrant colours back to your television.

Many of us lead such busy lifestyles that we tend to come home, flop onto the couch, switch on the TV, and relax with whatever program we fancy. It's hard to find the time to give your television some TLC, especially when it can be a very delicate operation, but if we neglect it, grime and dust can accumulate. Over time, your TV can lose some of its colourful pop and zing.

The good news is that by following a few simple steps, you can maintain the quality of your picture and keep your television in good condition. So, with that in mind, here's how to clean a TV screen.

In a hurry?

Here's the short version:

Power off and unplug the TV.

Have multiple microfiber cloths and a flat-panel TV cleaning solution on hand.

Wipe away any surface dust with one microfiber cloth until the screen is dust-free.

Dampen another microfiber cloth with your chosen TV cleaning solution, not the TV screen itself. Fold the cloth so no edges are showing and it fits into the palm of your hand.

Gently wipe the screen to remove smudges, fingerprints, and other murky spots.

Dry the TV screen with a third microfiber cloth before powering it back on.

Good to know: Pressing on hard could damage your screen forever, so cleaning gently is the key to keeping your screen scratch-free!

Why should I clean my TV screen?

Many people don’t realise it, but the majority of flat-screen TVs, like LED and QNED models, have millions of micro-moving parts that can overheat. Not cleaning your flat-screen TV regularly could shorten its lifespan, as these parts struggle to perform at optimal levels.

Additionally, there's the cosmetic aspect and the vibrancy of the TV's display, which you might not notice dulling gradually. Removing dust build-up, grubby fingerprints, and any other mucky residue from the screen will restore your TV's true colour potential.

How to clean a TV screen

Preparation

Preparation is key to doing anything right, and cleaning your TV screen is no exception.

You'll also need water (dampen the cloth and leave it to dry until it's just slightly damp) or a special TV cleaning fluid specifically designed for TV screens. Additionally, have another microfiber cloth on hand for drying.

The don’ts are quite simple:

Never spray any liquid or cleaning products directly onto the TV screen

Don’t press on the TV screen

Never clean the screen with the TV switched on or plugged in

Now that we've covered the important safety precautions, switch the TV off and unplug it.

Dry dust

As you would expect, this is the simplest part of cleaning the TV. Take the microfiber cloth and fold it until you have a small enough section of clean, flat cloth that fits into the palm of your hand.

With a light sweeping motion from the centre of the TV screen, lightly brush away any surface dust so the microfiber cloth collects it.

<img class="alignright size-medium wp-image-32661" src="https://www.av.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2024/05/TCL-55C845K-55-Mini-LED-QLED-Google-TV-with-2.1-Onkyo-Sound-System-300x300.jpg" alt="TCL 55C845K 55" Mini-LED QLED Google TV with 2.1 Onkyo Sound System" width="300" height="300" />This is a very important step in cleaning your screen. Just as with the dry dust cleaning, fold the second microfiber cloth until you have a nice flat area. If you're using water, wet the cloth ever-so-slightly, but then leave it until it is nearly dry.

If you're using a specifically designed TV cleaning fluid, spray the microfiber cloth until it is moist, but not wet.

With your dampened microfiber cloth, start from the centre of the TV screen panel and clean outwards. This time, use a small circular motion, working towards the edge of the TV screen panel and concentrating on one-quarter of the panel at a time.

Rotate the microfiber cloth as needed. If you're using a specifically designed TV cleaning fluid, you may need to reapply the spray to moisten the clean area of the microfiber cloth until the entire TV screen has been wiped.

Target stubborn spots

Sometimes, you'll encounter a stubborn dirty grime spot that won't come clean easily. The key here is not to press too hard on the panel, as this will only push the grime deeper into the screen, making it even harder to clean. Instead, moisten the cloth a bit more. If you're using water and it isn't effective, you may need to purchase a specific TV screen cleaning fluid to complete the process.

Using the same microfiber cloth, reduce its surface area to about the size of your fist. Spray a little more fluid onto the cloth so it's wetter than before but still in a moist, dampened state. Then, using a circular motion, lightly clean the spot until the mark is removed. Do not be tempted to press hard or rub vigorously, as this will not improve the cleaning process and could damage the panel.

Dry

The reason for drying the panel is self-explanatory: water and electronics do not mix.

It’s imperative that you carry out this step before plugging the TV back into the mains.

With a clean and dry microfiber cloth, wipe every section of the TV screen panel that you have cleaned, ensuring all moisture is removed.
