This covers the Air Motion Transformer (AMT) and Slot Loaded Profiled Port; two key features, typically reserved for much more expensive speakers.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Air_Motion_Transformer\"><\/span>Air Motion Transformer<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4>\n<p>Air Motion Transformers (AMTs) are a unique type of electroacoustic transducer, invented by physicist and scientist Dr. Oskar Heil. They operate based on the Lorentz force that moves air in the single folds of the diaphragm, providing ultra-clean, detailed sound.<\/p>\n<p>They work differently from traditional tweeters. Instead of vibrating back and forth like a typical cone or dome tweeter, an AMT squeezes the air out laterally in a fashion often likened to the bellows of an accordion.<\/p>\n<p>This results in a larger surface area than other tweeter designs, allowing AMTs to move more air and produce sound with higher accuracy and less distortion.<\/p>\n<p>The specific AMT of the EVO 4.4s is unique and has been developed for high-frequency reproduction. This large AMT unit is designed to match the wide dispersion of the main drivers, contributing to a wider stereo image and ensuring a cohesive, well-integrated sound.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Slot_Loaded_Profiled_Port_SLPP\"><\/span>Slot Loaded Profiled Port (SLPP)<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4>\n<p>The port in the Wharfedale EVO 4.4 speakers is shaped as a narrow slot rather than the more common circular or square shape. This design helps reduce turbulence and improve the speaker&#8217;s efficiency by providing a longer surface area for air to move through.<\/p>\n<p>The unique Slot Loaded Profiled Port, known as the &#8216;SLPP&#8217;, of EVO 4.4 is one of the features contributing to their monumental and deep bass performance. They extend the low-frequency response and help control airflow from within the speaker, reducing distortion and delivering a cleaner, more powerful bass output.<\/p>\n<p>Interestingly, Wharfedale has positioned the SLPP in a gap between the cabinet&#8217;s base and the feet it rests on. This allows bass frequencies to be down-fired and disseminated throughout a room, as opposed to being projected out the back of the speaker and towards a rear wall.<\/p>\n<p>Somewhat similar to a front-ported speaker, this design ensures a greater portion of bass frequency information gets directed towards the listener. They feature an AMT, which we&#8217;ve already discussed, as well as a mid-range soft dome driver, and two Kevlar cone bass drivers. Let&#8217;s talk more in-depth about these.<\/p>\n<p>Firstly, the AMT; we know it, we love it. It&#8217;s 30 x 60mm in size and was developed out of Wharfedale&#8217;s flagship Elysian range. This means it&#8217;s inherited a premium, Elysian-level design while being much lower in price! That&#8217;s right, folks, value for money!<\/p>\n<p>Following the AMT is a dedicated midrange driver, an unusual yet impressive feature to find at this price point. The midrange driver comprises a soft fabric dome with a plasticiser coating added for extra damping. It measures 50mm, or approximately 2 inches.<\/p>\n<p>Two bass drivers complete the driver configuration on the EVO 4.4. These use advanced, low-distortion motor systems which, like the AMTs were developed out of the Elysian models. Say it with me: &#8220;value for money!&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>They are 150mm or approx. 6.5 inches and feature a black woven Kevlar cone. Kevlar, of course, is a great, stiff material that pushes air fantastically and handles the low frequencies achieved by the EVO 4.4 magnificently.<\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text admin_label=&#8221;Positioning (Image)&#8221; _builder_version=&#8221;4.17.4&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; custom_padding=&#8221;20px||||false|false&#8221; border_width_top=&#8221;2px&#8221; border_color_top=&#8221;gcid-45928375-1fd3-4d7e-b1f0-0adee316b54f&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{%22gcid-45928375-1fd3-4d7e-b1f0-0adee316b54f%22:%91%22border_color_top%22%93}&#8221;]<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Positioning\"><\/span>Positioning<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Thanks to features like the AMT and SLPP the Wharfedale EVO 4.4 speakers offer greater placement flexibility.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-20311 size-medium alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/www.av.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/Wharfedale-EVO-4.4-speakers-EVO-range-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"Wharfedale EVO 4 Range\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" \/>Having an AMT reduces the need for extensive &#8216;toeing&#8217; in, typically required by standard tweeter designs operating on a push\/pull motor system. This is due to the broader dispersion from the AMT, negating the need for triangulated positioning towards a sonic sweet spot.<\/p>\n<p>Moreover, the SLPP, located at the speaker&#8217;s base, decreases the likelihood of booming effects. These are effects often associated with rear-firing ports when positioned too close to a wall. The down-firing port disperses sound uniformly around the speaker, with any initial harshness being mitigated, especially on carpeted floors.<\/p>\n<p>However, given the substantial low-frequency capability of these speakers, we still recommend giving them space to breathe. Aiming to keep them at a reasonable distance, i.e., 200mm from the rear walls and 700mm from the side walls, ought to be sufficient for most interiors. But use your own judgement; do what sounds good and is convenient to you.<\/p>\n<p>Ideally, you&#8217;d also reserve the EVO 4.4s for medium-large sized rooms to avoid overwhelming your audio setup.<\/p>\n<p>If your room is on the smaller side, Wharfedale offers a <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.av.com\/Speakers\/Wharfedale-Evo-43-Floorstanding-Speakers-Pair-Walnut\/4GL3\">smaller floorstanding speaker model<\/a><\/strong> as well as two bookshelf models (<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.av.com\/Speakers\/Wharfedale-Evo-41-Speakers-White\/4GKV\">EVO 4.1<\/a><\/strong> and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.av.com\/Speakers\/Wharfedale-Evo-42-Speakers-White-Oak\/4GKZ\">EVO 4.2<\/a><\/strong>) in their EVO range. These might suit you better while still boasting the sonic benefits of the AMT and SLPP features.<\/p>\n<p>Now, as I segue from positioning into build quality, here&#8217;s a heads-up about handling the speakers. Unfortunately, if you struggle to move floorstanding speakers around by hand, the glossy finish and curved edges of this model aren&#8217;t going to simplify matters for you. Wharfedale has done fantastically to get almost subwoofer levels of bass from the EVO 4.4s. But, perhaps in this endeavour, the mid-bass region has been stretched.
