At various points in design history, this balance tilted in favour of one or the other, for example, with Rococo and Victorian-era fashions.<\/p>\n<p>Since 1896, however, designers have largely looked to Louis H. Sullivan\u2019s seminal essay \u2018The Tall Office Building Artistically Considered\u2019, in which the famous axiom \u201cform follows function\u201d was coined. In essence, this means aesthetic qualities (of a building or object) should be derived from the intended function, rather than for the sake of ornamentation or historical precedent.<\/p>\n<p>One of Sullivan\u2019s mentees and the architect behind New York\u2019s famous Guggenheim Museum, Frank Lloyd Wright, amended this axiom to \u201cform and function are one\u201d. And judging by today\u2019s most successful designs, an amalgamation of both elements certainly seems advantageous.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Form_and_Function_at_Devialet\"><\/span>Form and Function at Devialet<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4>\n<p>How, then, does Devialet manage this binary in their speaker design?<\/p>\n<p>While the unique, almost extra-terrestrial look of Devialet\u2019s Phantom speakers suggests an emphasis on form, the brand\u2019s design process is, in fact, an iterative one involving both acoustic engineers and designers. This sphere would vibrate in response to the amplifier\u2019s electrical signals and produce audible sound waves\u2014a breakthrough for the development of modern speakers.<\/p>\n<p>While Olson\u2019s device was a far cry from the efficiency and complexity of today\u2019s speakers, it visualised the ideal acoustic source in a spherical form. Nowadays, designing a spherical speaker is a much greater challenge. Traditional speaker components are designed to fit within flat, rectangular, or prismatic chassis\u2014not entirely curved ones like Olson\u2019s.<\/p>\n<p>As well as being like a game of Tetris on hard mode, designing a spherical speaker presents unique acoustic challenges. These include standing waves, diffraction, and unpredictable sonic reflections which lead to phase cancellation and comb-filtering effects.<\/p>\n<p>Despite these challenges, Olson&#8217;s work demonstrated how curved forms could facilitate omnidirectional sound, reduce distortion, and create a more natural soundstage. To Devialet, and other brands (like Elipson and Bowers &amp; Wilkins) who have successfully tackled the challenges of curvature, such benefits are well worth the extra cost and effort.<\/p>\n<p>By selecting a quasi-spherical shape for their Phantom and Mania speakers, Devialet demonstrates how visual characteristics can give rise to fantastic functional outcomes. They are commonly used in the study of earthquakes and natural phenomena as well as in the design and testing of musical instruments and loudspeakers. Therefore, they make a fitting and highly creative addition to the aesthetic features of Devialet speakers.<\/p>\n<p>But how exactly do Chladni patterns feature in the design of Devialet speakers?
